My thoughts on the eleventh episode of Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku.
Interesting episode although I agree with the general consensus that it felt rushed – condensing the entirety of one of the volumes into an episode is a daunting task and while we were jumping from scene to scene throughout the episode, this is no where near as bad as the ‘trimming’ could have been and I think the approach was necessary in moving forward in the following 2 episodes.
That being said, I have to wonder about the inclusion of some scenes such as the interaction between Hachiman and Totsuka on the tennis court – I find those scenes as fun as anyone else however in the interest of preserving content while making the episode roll out coherently I don’t entirely understand the point of the scene when Totsuka doesn’t really aid Hachiman during the race outside of holding up some of the runners during the race (something that probably could have been implied with a nod of the head).
Pacing aside, I’m happy that the show still has a more positive tone than before and while we are still dealing like things like Hayama’s complications we can also enjoy the more simple interactions between Yukinoshita, Yui, and Hachiman in scenes like the club room and the infirmary. With all of the Yukinoshita developments as of late the show feels a little stark when concerning Yui however maybe the next few episodes will address that disparity in attention although at the same time they may very well run with the momentum and really drill home the Yukinoshita pairing.
Hacihman’s exchanges with Hayama were probably the most driving thing within the episode (outside of the overt romance scenes). There was even an interesting shot of the two discussing the way in which Hayama is bound to what is expected of him and how he wanted to be free of it – the camera panning across the setting behind metal bars for a short while. I thought it was an interesting idea and I thought visually demonstrated the ‘trapped’ feeling exhibited by Hayama.
