Episodic Thoughts: Yahari Season 2 – Episode 10

My thoughts on the tenth episode of Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku.

Oh what glorious retribution for the planning comity. The show really went out of its way to make the comity group feel as awful as possible down to the very end, syncing up their responses to further amplify the incoherent mess of nonsense they usually spout. While they got scolded for their forwardness by Iroha, it was nice to see Hachiman and Yukinoshita back on the same page – something that is highlighted throughout the episode. While the event going ‘according to plan’ was not the ultimate catastrophe that we might have expected or even wanted (in the way of punishment), it going as planned enabled Yukinoshita to keep one of her promises to Hachiman while simultaneously finding another way to lash back at the comity beforehand without damaging the outcome of things.

There were a few things that transpired this episode like Komachi’s repeated disapearences to give Hachiman some alone time with the respective girls and Hachiman’s interaction with Iroha at the beginning where her reply to him ‘hitting on her’ once again changed to be slightly less opposed in its phrasing. The most interesting content however I think was at the end, with the appearance of Yukinoshita’s mother and the awkward dialogue that followed. Like her sister, Yukinoshita’s mother had an air of danger to her, as if she was threatening the dynamic of things by simply being present. Her lines, while not actively cold, were somewhat dismissive of those present as she addressed Hayama and Yukinoshita.

The dialogue at this point kind of falls apart as most of what transpires happens so in subtext as each person glares at one another which made for excellent tension – between Hayama’s slip-up with Yukinoshita’s name and Hachiman’s glaring daggers at him the atmosphere couldn’t have gotten much strained and the interjection by Haruno of “don’t” topped it all off. While this scene and these exchanges have their own intricacies and implications, I think they foreshadow some of the events to come as we are winding down to episode 12 and with the appearence of Yukinoshita’s mother I think we have some idea of what the final drama or obstacle will be.
