My thoughts on the ninth episode of Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku.
For the first time in a while I can reflect on this episode and say it was enjoyable to watch – not that the previous or even the other episodes were not well done or good however they often featured something that either game them an unpleasant or grave tone. With this episode, I felt we were given some space to breathe while still featuring some scenes such as the waterfall ride. I’m glad that we are tastefully avoiding any more of the planning comity and their hand motions for now.
From the very beginning I was happy with the tone of things – Hachiman’s comedic ‘I want to die’ reaction to his actions last episode felt right at home and Komachi came in for the comedic kill with her impersonation. We instantly made light of the previous episode and I think this was absolutely the right choice pacing-wise. As we can see during the episode, we haven’t decided to ignore or neglect what just happened but rather treat it like a turning point of sorts.
There were a few important scenes even within this more lighthearted episode. The ride with Yukinoshita and Hachiman was well done in my opinion – her request heartfelt and the visuals very interesting and serene. This was a stark difference from their relationship even in the previous episode so while we may have had a bit of fun this time around, the pacing of things has by no means stopped or slowed. I’m glad we even returned to a bit of natural banter between the two before they reunited with the group and a quick shot of Yukinoshita looking at the picture of them from earlier before stowing it.
The other scene of particular note was probably the distant confession of Iroha to Hayama which again had pretty interesting visuals attached to it and the noiseless atmosphere lent itself well to the situation. While we still have a couple of events coming up, this scene at least sets up some future drama of sorts.
